- Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program abroad, and the research at Temple will fulfill graduation requirements;
- May participate in an internship program for a maximum of 12 months per academic level;
- May not extend the internship past one year as determined by the US Department of State;
- Are ineligible for a Social Security Number unless s/he will be paid by Temple University;
- Are required to return to home institution upon completion of the internship program;
- Are ineligible to return to the US as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor for one year from the J Student Intern Program completion date of the internship.

Student Intern Forms
The Inviting Department should complete and submit the BIRTU Form to ISSS. Include a Home University Attestation Form with it if the applicant is a student enrolled in a degree program abroad.
- Reinforces an intern's academic study
- Exposes the intern to American techniques, methodologies, and expertise and expands their knowledge and skills
- Enhances the intern's knowledge of American culture and society
- Unskilled or casual labor
- Child care or elder care
- Aviation
- Clinical positions or engaging in any other kind of work that involves patient care or contact, including any work that would require student interns to provide therapy, medication, or other clinical or medical care (e.g., sports or physical therapy, psychological counseling, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, social work, speech therapy, or early childhood education)
- Cannot involve any "position, occupation, or business that could bring the Exchange Visitor Program or the Department into notoriety or disrepute." [22 C.F.R. § 62.23(i)(8)(ii)]
- 3-week minimum, 12 month maximum - no extensions
- Annual compensation of at least $24,000 must be provided by either the home institution, government scholarship, Temple University funding and/or personal funding.
- Participation in the Student Intern subcategory is available only to foreign students currently enrolled and pursuing a degree at a postsecondary academic institution outside the United States, and whose U.S. internship will "fulfill the educational objectives for his or her current degree program at his or her home institution."

A completed application must be submitted to Temple at least 2 months prior to the desired start date.
ISSS will take 7-10 business days to process applications.
Students pursuing a graduate level degree will need to be approved through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
Students pursuing an bachelors level degree will work directly with ISSS, no approval from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is needed

As per the U.S. Department of State regulations, the hosting Temple University faculty mentor must evaluate the progress and performance of the J‐1 Student Intern prior to the completion of the internship. All internships require a final concluding evaluation. The internships lasting longer than six months also require at least one additional evaluation undertaken at the midpoint of the program. The hosting department must retain J‐1 Student Intern evaluations (electronic or hard copy) for at least 3 years following the completion of each intern’s program.
A copy of each evaluation must be sent to ISSS within 5 business days of the midpoint evaluation and ten business days of the program end. ISSS is requires to keep the evaluations for three years after the J-1 student Intern departs. The form is available here
