International Travel

If you have an immigration emergency outside normal business hours, please contact Temple University Campus Safety Services at 215-204-1234. Campus Safety Services will then reach out to ISSS staff.

The information below applies to J-1 Research Scholars/Professors/Student Interns and Nonimmigrant Employees (H-1B, O-1, TN and E-3) who are sponsored by Temple University. If you have a green card application pending, ask your attorney about Advanced Parole. If you are hoping to work while you are abroad, you must discuss this with your Department as there can be Tax, Labor Law and Controlled Tech issues for Temple Employees working while outside the US.

Prepare for International Travel:

  • Employees should avoid storing confidential company documents or sensitive emails locally on their devices. Instead, they should use secure cloud storage solutions and log out of these accounts before traveling.
  • Encrypt any confidential or sensitive company files stored on devices. This adds an extra layer of protection in case the device is inspected. If asked about such documents, employees should explain that they contain only company information and that they are required by their employer to keep it protected.
  • Consider using dedicated travel devices with minimal data. These devices should only contain essential information needed for the trip. Employees can consider not taking company devices, especially for vacations.
  • Activate airplane mode on devices to prevent access to cloud-stored data, which CBP is not authorized to search because it is not saved locally on the device itself.
