Student Leadership and Advocacy

Student Leadership Programs At ISA

Be a student leader and get involved on campus!

ISA supports international student leadership development. Student leadership positions help you to boost your resume and gain valuable life skills including:

  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Learning about campus resources to help you succeed as a student
  • Expanding your social and professional skills
  • Opportunities to learn about yourself
  • Have fun!

We encourage international students to apply for positions both within our office and around campus. For example, outside of ISA, international students are represented in key leadership positions such as Temple Student Government, Resident Assistants, and Owl Team leaders.

Advocacy

In a diverse and inclusive environment, international students are a particularly important contributor to the Temple community. ISA is committed in playing a critical role in advocating on behalf of the international community at Temple to ensure the needs of international students are met. In addition to cross-collaborating with the different international offices (Global Engagement Office, TCALC, Global Programs, ISSS and CCLI), we also partner with a variety of offices on campus to plan campus-wide initiatives including IDEAL, Wellness Resource Center, Student Activities, Sustainability Office, etc.

IRCs meet regular with the ISA team and assist with event planning for the larger international community.

Peer2Peer Mentors

In this program, the mentors meet weekly with new students and provide guidance, help students get involved, and connect them to resources as needed. Peer2Peer Mentors meet weekly as a team and participate in leadership development activities. This role directly impacts student success and requires a significant dedication to helping new international students.

Office Assistants

Office Assistants are paid student workers who provide administrative support to the International Student Affairs staff and have an opportunity to get hands-on experiences with office work, marketing and communications, and event planning. Serving as an office assistant is a great opportunity for professional growth.

Global Engagement Week and #YouAreWelcomeHere

The #YouAreWelomeHere campaign is an initiative founded by Temple University in 2016 as, "a welcome message from U.S. higher education to international students around the world."  Since then, 400+ U.S. universities have participated in this campaign with another 50+ universities including Temple creating a scholarship for new coming international students under the tag #YouAreWelcomeHere. At Temple, we have created a week-long series of events to celebrate our international students under the name Global Engagement Week. Learn more about the #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign and the Global Engagement Week.

Global Engagement Anti-Racism Taskforce

In 2020, the Global Engagement Anti-Racism Taskforce was created, led by the International Student Affairs office. The mission of this team is to, "understand the role that we, as international students, study abroad students, and staff, play as global citizens in promoting anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion." One key area of focus for this taskforce is exploring the student experience in regard to anti-racism efforts and education. Events and trainings will be forthcoming in Spring.
