Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program

Our “Philadelphias”

It is fitting that Temple University is located in “the new Philadelphia” and shares a name with the “Philadelphia of the past,” Amman, Jordan. However, our two cities share more than a name. Our “Philadelphias” offer a wealth of historical and cultural sites that enhance understanding of cultural values, continuously provide support and services to our immigrant and refugee communities, and provide a unique backdrop for all who live, work and study.

Together with the U.S. Embassy Amman, Jordan and the EducationUSA Amman office, Temple University’s Office of Global Engagement is pleased to host the Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program (JPOP).

What is the Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program?

This fully funded program, hosted by Temple’s Center for American Language and Culture (TCALC), aims to support the Jordanian government’s mission to achieve inclusive economic growth and improve education outcomes. The two-year long Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program, will

  • provide U.S. pre-college programming for high-achieving, financially disadvantaged students.
  • guide students through months’ long virtual workshops where students will engage in a series of pre-college preparatory courses
  • host the scholars on Temple’s campus for the in-person EducationUSA Academy and workshops in summer 2024
  • support scholars through the application process with the goal of enrollment to a U.S. university in fall 2025. (University matriculation costs are not covered by this scholarship.)

What are the guidelines for scholarship recipients?

Each of the ten (10) scholarship recipients will be

  • between the ages of 15 – 17 years old (and must not be older than 17 years old on July 13, 2024, the first day of the EdUSA Academy)
  • able to show financial need/disadvantage
  • a citizen of Jordan
  • have at least an intermediate level of English language proficiency

What are the Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program objectives?

There are three (3) main objectives of the Jordan Pre-College Opportunity Program:

  1. To provide the ten scholars with the knowledge, resources, and support to gain enrollment into and graduate from a U.S. higher education institution.
  2.  In doing so, these scholars will gain a U.S. education and will also be exposed to U.S. culture and values resulting in strengthening U.S.-Jordan relations.
  3. With this education, knowledge, experience and exposure, scholars may then become an integral part of a stronger Jordanian workforce that will in turn create economic growth for the country and all its citizens.
